I Hired My 13-Year-Old Nephew To Play You Chess

George is 13, my actual nephew, and very good at chess. As of this week he's also on payroll. Every weekday from 4–6pm Central he sits in the Chester lobby and waits for somebody to play him.

For each game George wins he earns $5. For showing up and putting in the time he earns hourly. We pay in BTC or USD — his call. It's real money.

He's interested in a career making games and shipping product, and online income is a bonus he's clearly motivated by. The fastest way I know to learn what makes things work is to be inside the loop while it's running. So he gets shipped real software, has to log bugs, has to keep a schedule, has to manage two devices to make sure he doesn't miss matches. The pay isn't ironic.
